Shenmue 3 : Quelques précisions sur le Kickstarter

Vous n’avez pas pu y échapper si vous avez vu la conférence de Sony à l’E3 2015 : Shenmue 3 sortira enfin après quinze ans d’attente. Seulement, ce retour inespéré mérite bien qu’on s’y attarde un peu, histoire de tordre le cou à certaines rumeurs…

Lors de sa conférence de l’E3 2015, Sony frappait un grand coup en annonçant coup sur coup la sortie de The Last Guardian, le remake de Final Fantasy VII, et celui qui nous intéresse ici, Shenmue 3. En effet, si l’annonce à fait le buzz en étant financé en moins de 8h sur Kickstarter, le fait de voir Yû Suzuki être obligé de passer par la case crowdfunding pour voir renaître les aventures de Ryo Hazuki ont eu un peu de mal à passer auprès de certains joueurs. Explications…

Sony ne finance pas le développement du jeu

Et oui, s’il aurait été tout à fait légitime de penser que l’apparition de Suzuki-san lors de la conférence Sony indiquait un accord de financement tacite, il n’en est rien. Et c’est Cédric Biscay, le co-producteur de Shenmue 3 lui même qui le dit via Twitter.

SONY will not get any money from the KS, they will help to finance the PS4 version and will also help for advertisement.

Sony is providing various supports, including marketing and investment, to YSNet. However, SONY is just one of many backers of #Shenmue3

Yu Suzuki met les choses au point

Yû Suzuki s’est d’ailleurs exprimé sur l’épineuse question du financement, histoire de rassurer les joueurs :

There have been many questions concerning Shenmue 3’s budget and what outside sources will be added to the money collected through Kickstarter. I apologize for not having been more forthright in this area and would like to take this opportunity to help clarify the situation.

Ys Net and I have been putting in many long years trying to find a way to bring back a sequel that so many fans have waited so long for. After learning of Kickstarter, I knew it would be possible to get Shenmue 3 started. Wanting to make the best game possible, I also knew that I would have to look to more traditional means to obtain all the funds that would be needed to create the game I had envisioned.

Sony and Shibuya Productions have been wonderful partners because they believe in Shenmue and want to see the best for the fans and the game. Their investment in (and support of) Shenmue have helped to realize a sequel that will stand proud with its predecessors. While it is not business practice to discuss the specific details of such arrangements, I can say that with their assistance on the production and marketing end, and in Sony’s case with some publishing support as well, Ys Net is able to use more of the money we collect through Kickstarter purely for Shenmue 3’s development. It is also important to note that your funds are going strictly to Ys Net for development of Shenmue 3 – Sony and Shibuya Productions are not seeing a cent of your Kickstarter dollars. […]

Of course, like with any Kickstarter, additional funding will only help us make a better game. On top of everything Shenmue 3 will already bring, the Stretch Goals that I have laid out will add extra quests, events, and new gameplay systems that will make the game even more immersive and take the series to the next level. At the $5 million mark, there will be an all new gameplay feature I would be excited to be able to add to the Shenmue legacy. If we should make the $10 million Stretch Goal, a much larger, completely open world will be yours to explore.

Even if these Stretch Goals are not reached, Shenmue 3 will already be a sequel true to its name, and one we can all be proud of. It is my hope though, that together we can make this Shenmue just as revolutionary as the first two were.

I understand this statement may by late in coming. Going forward, we wish to be as open as possible concerning the game’s development. I would like to again ask for your cooperation and support in helping make Shenmue 3 the best that it can be.

En gros et pour faire simple : Sony ne finance pas le développement du jeu (ou du moins pas dans son intégralité), ce qui est plutôt logique lorsque l’on connaît le risque que représente le financement d’une saga comme Shenmue. L’implication du géant japonais se retrouvera donc dans le marketing et l’aide qu’il apportera à YS Net, (le studio de développement fondé par Yû Suzuki) dans la réalisation de la version PS4. Les fonds récoltés via Kickstarter représentent donc bel et bien le budget alloué au développement du jeu (soit à l’heure actuelle plus de 3 millions de dollars, autant dire pas grand chose pour un titre aussi ambitieux que veut l’être Shenmue 3).

De nouveaux paliers de financement évoqués

Suzuki-san s’est également prêté au jeu des questions/réponses sur Reddit, et en à profité pour répondre à quelques questions relatives au financement de Shenmue 3.

How much game elements/features will we be missing in the game if the campaign doesn’t reach the $5 million mark?

I will say this: if we reach the $5 mil mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality.

At $10 million, it will truly have the features of an open world.

Les différents paliers de financement ont été dévoilés…

On rappelle en passant que même la plus petite contribution compte :  de 1 $ (pour permettre à Shenmue 3 d’exister) , à 29 $ (soit environ 25 € pour une copie digitale PC ou PS4) ou 60 $ (soit 50 € pour une version boîte PC). Quant à savoir si une version boîte PS4 ou Xbox One sont prévues, sachez que les développeurs restent très ouverts sur la question, mais que cela dépendra certainement des fonds levés via Kickstarter. Y’a plus qu’à espérer que Sega garde un oeil sur cette campagne et se décide enfin à ressortir les deux premiers épisodes en HD dans les prochains mois…

Bref, si vous voulez un Shenmue 3 aussi ambitieux que ne l’étaient ses aînés, vous savez ce qu’il vous reste à faire…

En attendant, sachez que la sortie de Shenmue 3 est prévue pour décembre 2017 sur PS4 et PC. Oui, l’attente va être longue, mais on a bien dû attendre quinze ans pour espérer une suite, on peut bien patienter encore quelques mois, non ?
